This series is a study in character design from the Netflix original series “Stranger Things.”
The characters featured in this project include Joyce Byers, Dustin Henderson, Nancy Wheeler, and Eleven “El”.
This project was done for fun, and was used as a process to get me more familiar with character design and anatomy, as well as proportions and texturing. I had a lot of fun working on this, and really felt as though I improved from my starting point. The poses of the characters are based heavily on reference photos. It was also really fun to see a style begin to develop in my artwork.
I tried to keep the components that were essential to each character in tact while simultaneously bringing in my own stylistic choices. I tried to keep the backgrounds neutral and simple so as to not distract from the main focal point, which is the featured character.
A short summary of the Netflix series “Stranger Things” is as follows. There is a government facility based in the middle of Hawkins, Indiana. The Hawkins Institute facility and its employees are known for conducting experiments of varying degree and ethical morale, and in 1983, one of the experiments goes horribly wrong. The workers enlist in the aid of a young girl, known only as 011, to interact with and control the dangerous experiment with her mind. The experiment, which comes to be called the Demogorgon, exists in a parallel universe called the Upside Down. During the process, Hawkins Institute accidentally opens a doorway of sorts between the two separate universes. Lured with and feeding off of blood, the Demogorgon escapes the Upside Down, taking many victims with it. Now it’s up to three kids, a county sheriff, and a girl with mind control and destructive powers to put a stop to everything Hawkins Institute has created.
The show was released August 31st, 2016, and is set in 1983. The show resulted in tremendously positive viewer ratings and reviews, and is one of the top television series of the current day, and the top online original television series, topping another Netflix popular original “Orange is the New Black” by almost 3 times the demand. The show is directed by the Duffer Brothers, and a second season will be release around August or September of 2017.
This series is a work in progress, and will be updated as works are completed.
